RISING star Morgan Lake insists she is turning her attention to European glory after soaring to new heights at the Sainsbury’s Indoor British Championships.

The 17-year-old was in sensational form at Sheffield’s EIS on Saturday as she set a new British junior record in the high jump with a leap of 1.94m.

That was enough to nudge Isobel Pooley into third but still not high enough to take top spot – with Katarina Johnson-Thompson setting a new national record of 1.97m to clinch gold.

And Lake says she was honoured to share the field with such amazing competitors and hopes to use their wisdom to her advantage.

“I’m really happy to get that junior record,” said Lake. “It was such a tough field but I also think I made it hard for myself getting lots of third attempt jumps. But it all worked out in the end so I’m pleased with my performance.

“Isobel Pooley is obviously such an amazing jumper and a previous UK record holder so really pleased to be able to get second.

“I get on with Katarina as well and she’s a massive role model for me so it was really nice to have her next to me during competition.

“I’m getting used to competing at senior level a bit more now but I’ve got a few more junior competitions to go, it’s just getting the balance right really but I think I’m nearly there.” One event wasn’t enough for Lake over the weekend and she was in action again on Sunday as she looked to repeat continue her good form in the long jump.

However, a slight niggle saw her withdraw as a precaution, with next month’s Pentathalon at the European Indoor Championships in Prague her priority.

She added: “It’s not a big injury concern or anything for me. It just didn’t feel right out there and I thought it would be better to just leave it for today and hopefully jump better in the rest of the indoor season for it.” “Long jump is a big scoring event for me so I’ll just need to get back to some hard training and hopefully it will be alright.

“I won’t be going to Birmingham next week so my next competition will be the European indoors.

“I’ll be putting in a hard couple of weeks’ training and just trying to get into the best possible shape I can be for Prague.

“Training has been hard over the winter but I’m sure it will pay off over the summer months. Right now I’m focused on making the team for the world championships and I’d love to PB there.” Sainsbury’s is a proud partner of British Athletics.
