WSEH have won the UK Athletics Southern Premier League title and with it booked a place in the National Finals in Birmingham this September, writes Dennis Daly.

 

The local club recorded a total of 688 points to finish as runners-up behind hosts Blackheath & Bromley (725) in the final league meeting last month.
WSEH got the best possible start with a league record win for Taylor Campbell in the Under-20 (U20) hammer, despite incessant rain, with a distance of 72.18m.
The hammer event continued to generate good points in the other age groups, Bayley Campbell was second in the U17 with 54.69m.
The same place was gained by Amy Herrington (29.59m) and Rachel Denton-Snape (24.21m) in the U20 ladies, as well as Ellie Chandler (50.34m) in the U17.
The opening track event, the 400m, also saw WSEH athletes to the fore. In the U20 race, Sean Rafique was second in 59.46 seconds (secs). Lordie Bevan was second in the U17 event with 1:01.76.
The best of the ladies came in the U17 300m hurdles with second places for Anna Croft (45.44secs) and Alana Fagan (48.11secs).
It was females, however, the provided the best results in the sprint races. Lara Pleace (13.05secs) and Kenya Williams (13.3secs) both grabbed second placed in the U17 100m.
Olivia Caesar was second in the U20 200m in 25.90secs and a third place was taken by Tia Richards (27.35secs) in the U17 age group.
The best of the males were Alex Haydock-Wilson (23.44secs) and newcomer Alex Pocock-Stillman (25.79secs) in the U17 race, both claiming third places. Haydock-Wilson returned to the start line in the 400m, this time with a victory in 51.25secs.
In his first race since an injury enforced lay off, Cameron Challis was pleased with his third place in the U20 race in the good time of 50.22secs. The women also got amongst the points with a third for Lauren Herrington (1:02.59).
Croft was back in action in the U17 300m, partnered by Rhiannon Ward, both securing third places in 42.51secs and 43.70secs respectively.
The Moore twins, Adam and Blake, ran almost identical times in the U20 800m with 2:01.24 and 2:91.61 respectively, both for second places.
Laura Herrington reappeared to claim third in the U20 female 800m in 2:22.02. Newcomer Saskia Krefting did well on her debut to claim third in the U17 race in 2:22.34.
Niall Unger was the best of the males with his third place in the 1,500m U17 in 4:12.44. Hannah Novacovic impressed with her runaway victory in the U20 1,500m in 4:52.79.
The female success continued in the U17 races with second places for Morven Goodrum (4:44.46) and Hannah Dingemans (5:36.04). In the 3,000m U17 Ben Hooper was second on 9:24.07.
More second places were claimed by Felicity Johnson in the U20 race in 10:27.46 and in the U17 race by Dingemans in 11:59.01.
The late afternoon steeplechase proved to be the best of the track races for WSEH with maximum points being gained in both the U20 and U17 ladies events.
Tilly Compton-Stewart (5:07.87) and Kathryn Ditton (5:14.06) were the providers in the U20 race, and Alex Barbour (5:19.05) and Meg Ormond (5:38.28) in the U17 event.
The best results for the males came from Matt Bradley (4:50.19) and Ethan Tattersall (5:02.03) in the U17 with a second and first respectively, and a third place for Joe Spicer in
the U20 2,000m in 6:56.47.
The field events as usual significantly added to the WSEH points tally. Challis was the U17 long jump winner with 5.87m, and then going on to place third in the triple jump with 11.77m.
Zoe Overall (9.95m) and Isabelle Charters (5.00m) both claimed second placed in the U20 ladies long jump.
In the men's U20, Dami Famikin was third with 6.05m. Famikin appeared again in the triple jump to take another third with 12.43m. Charters was third in the U20 ladies with 10.70m.
The men's U20 high jump produced a second place for Sam Hewitt on 1.90m. There was a victory for Nadya Wisham in the U20 with 1.50m, with Pleace third on 1.35m. Megan Porter repeated the feat with a win in the U17 event on 1.55m.
The discus again provided more good points. Gurlal Randhawa was second in the U20 with 45.11m and the busy Luke Batup claimed third with 22.31m. James Madle was also third in the U17 discus with 29.96m.
The success rate continued in the ladies event with a second place from Amy Herrington (29.59m) and a win for Overall (26.53m) in the U20 age group. Denton-Snape finished third in the U17 event with a throw of 24.81m.
The WSEH shot throwers were also in good form. Sarah Melbourne (10.49m) and Amy Herrington (9.26m) took maximum points in the U20. Molly Horler was second in the U17 with 10.80m.
The javelin provided more good points. Caroline Spence was runner-up in the U17 with a useful 20.47m.
Batup (29.81m) and Theo Melbourne (28.04m) both placed second in the U20 event, whilst Jude Compton-Stewart was third in the U17 with 45.46m.
The best of the final relay events came in the U20 ladies 4x400m where the squad of Barbour, Lauren Herrington, Novakovic and Caesar sped the baton around to claim second in 4.09.24.
