WINDSOR’S Jake Norris insists he is aiming even higher after once again writing his name into the Sainsbury’s School Games hammer record books.

Heading to Manchester’s Regional Athletics Centre on Friday, Norris was already able to toast a golden season having triumphed at 17 competitions already, as well as representing Great Britain at the World Youth Championships in Colombia, where he finished seventh.

And the 16-year-old was in no mood to miss out on another top step of the podium as he won the hammer gold with a Championship record throw of 70.65m.

It was a case of déjà vu for Norris who did exactly the same thing last year when he claimed the title with a then Championship record of 69.32m, and the teenager was delighted to once again rule the roost.

“It’s great to win the gold medal and it is what I came here for,” said Norris, a Windsor, Slough, Eton, & Hounslow Athletics Club member.

“This year all I wanted was to get the record. I set it last year and got gold so I’m really happy.

“Hopefully I will go to more World Championships. Recently I went to Colombia for the World Youth Games and finished seventh. I just hope I can keep recreating these kind of performances.

“I will be top of the age group in Europe next year so hopefully I should medal next summer at the Europeans."

The Sainsbury’s 2015 School Games, which is supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, featured 12 different sports across four days.

And after seeing British women’s 100m and 200m record hold Dina Asher-Smith – who won gold in the latter at the 2012 Sainsbury’s School Games – Norris is dreaming big.

“I don’t aspire to be like any athlete in particular,” he added. “It’s good to have a look at people and see what they do differently to you, but in order to be the best I think you have to have your own personality and style and not copy other people.

“It was really good to see Dina Asher-Smith though and to know that someone like her has competed at a School Games and is now where she is is really inspiring.”

The Sainsbury’s 2015 School Games is supported by a range of partners including the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Sport England, Youth Sport Trust, Department of Health and British Paralympic Association. The Games were held in venues across Manchester from 3-6 September 2015. Visit www.2015schoolgames.com for more information.
