Set pieces do the trick

BURNHAM made it five wins on the bounce with a 2-1 victory over Barton Rovers at The Gore on Tuesday evening.

Ryan Bird was switched to centre-back in the absence of Will Dunlop but he popped up with the opener in the 10th minute and that is the way it stayed until half time.

Bird also hit the bar from a set piece, however, the struggling Rovers hit back to equalise six minutes into the second half through Liam George's first goal of the campaign.

The Blues did not have to wait long to regain the lead though as captain Paul Brett rose highest to head home the winner.

"People are raising their games against us," said manager Jamie Jarvis. "The pitch was good but cut up and Barton did well but we missed three one-on-ones but Bretty and Birdy scored from set pieces."

And that was something that Jarvis had been critical of from his side earlier in the campaign, not getting enough goals from corners and free-kicks.

He added: "There's more belief there now, they are going in thinking they are going to win the ball. They were two good headers and Birdy also hit the bar.

"I thought we just did enough but were not brilliant."
