THE play-offs were the target for Burnham at the start of the season but they currently sit top of the league and Jamie Jarvis wants them to stay there.

On Wednesday evening they needed a late own goal to beat bottom of the table Aylesbury United 2-1.

The Blues supremo said: "We are delighted to be top of the league and we will try to stay there but it will be tough as there are a lot of points still to be won and lost. There is a long way to go."

On the back of Saturday's victory, Aylesbury United were clearly up for taking on their Buckinghamshire rivals, but it was the Blues who went in front in the 37th minute through Stuart Swift.

The Ducks hit back midway through the second half with a goal by ex-Burnham midfielder Jon Montgomery.

However, the visitors did not give up and stretched their lead at the top to six points courtesy of an Ashleigh James own goal.

He went to head a cross back to his goalkeeper who should have gathered the ball but went to chest it instead and could only watch it trickle into the net in the 87th minute.

A relieved Jarvis said: "We didn't play well but ground out the result, that's what counts.

"We created enough chances as we had four cleared off the line and hit the post and bar."

Next up for Burnham is a home match against AFC Sudbury on Saturday and then a trip to Barton Rovers on Tuesday night as they look to build on their 10 victories in a row.

Jarvis added: "Not many people have done that, not just 10 unbeaten but 10 wins in a row.

"We've just got to carry on and build on that. We will approach the next two games as we always do against teams midtable or below, we will have to make sure we are up for it."
