CHALVEY (WMC) Sports Reserves boss Carl Feasey is proud of his team despite seeing them lose 2-0 to Binfield Reserves in the 96th Ascot & District Fielden Cup final.

“I thought we gave a good account of ourselves considering we’re a Division Two pub side,” he said after the tie played at Bracknell Town last Wednesday.

“Beforehand I don’t think anyone gave us a chance of getting anything out of the game.”

Chalvey, however, were a little slow to get going and it was not too long before they fell behind.

In front of a crowd of just over 200, they conceded a goal in the 19th minute when keeper Steve Quelch managed to push out a header from Matt Davis at his right-hand post but could not prevent the Binfield man netting at the second attempt.

Sports had a let off when their defence, looking to spring the offside trap, was split wide open down the middle, leaving Ethan Jerome with a one-on-one with Quelch, but his hurried shot flew high and wide.

However, the East Berkshire Football League Division Two champions did not learn from their mistake as in the 32nd minute leading scorer Jerome was left with a similar opportunity and this time Binfield’s leading scorer kept his cool to round Quelch before slotting the ball home.

Suburban League Premier Division side Binfield clearly had the better of the first-half, but it was a much closer affair in the second period after Feasey had geed them up during the interval.

“We went at them and I thought we were their equal,” he said. “I asked the players for a strong last 45 minutes in our last game of the season to see where it would take us, but we came up short. We just didn’t get in as many shots at goal as Binfield did.”

Chalvey struggled to break down the Binfield defence and rarely looked like giving their many supporters something to cheer about although they did have shouts for a penalty turned down when a Moles player looked to have handled the ball.

The best of the chances they did manage to create fell to Ben Paternoster, but it was one of those occasions when the man who had played in goal last season had left his shooting boots at home.

Konnor Saunders, who worked non-stop throughout the 90 minutes, certainly made his presence felt in the middle of the field and was clearly his side’s best player on the night.

Chalvey nearly conceded a third goal right on the final whistle when Binfield captain Jamie McCarthy hammered a long-range shot onto the top of the crossbar.

Feasey added: “We won Division Two and wanted to make it a double. We came up a bit short in the end, but we were happy with how we performed and we can be proud of what we have done this season.”
