CHALVEY Sports are out of the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy this season after losing 5-3 on penalties against Newport Pagnell Town Reserves on Saturday.

The Stabmonks recovered from falling 3-1 behind to draw 3-3 in the quarter-final tie at Arbour Park thanks to goals from Jason Marney, Bryan Taylor and Matt Edwards.

However, Newport held their nerve to win the shoot-out and progress into the semi-finals of the county competition.

Chalvey manager Merv Lloyd told the Observer: “We started quite badly but characteristically we do take a while to get going. We normally get ourselves out of it by not conceding early goals.

“We got ourselves back into it as we normally do but I was very impressed with how Newport Pagnell turned up. They were really up for the game and didn’t come 55 miles for the fun of it.

“We played well in stages and so did they but we always let one another back in. Newport scored first and we were always chasing, but there were no real panic stations at half time.

“We took the game to them but lost three players to injury in the second half. The substitutes that came on were commendable and we never looked disjointed.

“In the last 15 minutes, I thought it was going to be our game but on the day it was not our shoot-out. Sometimes it goes for you and sometimes it doesn’t.

Slough Observer:

“It was a game we wanted to win, but not a problem because there’s still a lot to play for this season so no-one is too disappointed.

“It was a really good game to watch and the neutrals thought it was brilliant. We’re not neutrals so are gutted but will take it on the chin because that is football. I would like to see how far Newport Pagnell go and we wish them all the best.

"In the last 15 minutes I thought it was our game but football is about action and putting the ball in the back of the net.

"All the best to Newport Pagnell, they're a good bunch of lads, but knew they had a game on their hands on Saturday .

"In the last 15 minutes there was only one winner, but it's about what happens over 90 minutes.

"We will just get on now and take something out of it, there were some positives in what we did and what we've got to do next."

Chalvey return to action in Hellenic Division Two East with a trip to Virginia Waters Reserves this Saturday (3pm).

Lloyd said: "Virginia Water are going to want to prove a point without a doubt. They will raise their game because we're now a feather in the cap because we rarely lose games.

Slough Observer:

"We want and need nine points because it's getting very tight at the top and only 100 per-cent effort will do.

"I've known my players for many years and know their confidence will not come into the equation. We're more of a threat now after losing than possibly if we had won.

"People do feel upset and let down after last weekend, so we will be up for the game on Saturday and it's all about the three points that we need.

"We don't suffer with nerves by nature because we keep very close and we're going to have to win because it's getting tight at the top.

"Upon reflection, it might be the lose that gives us the kick up the backside that we need for the rest of the season."
