LANGLEY have won the Slough Town Senior Cup this season after a 2-0 victory over Chalvey Sports at The Gore on Good Friday.

The deadlock was broken on 38 minutes when Ben White beat Chalvey full-back Liam Nash and found his strike partner Dean Papali, who fired past keeper Kieran Hudson and into the roof of the net.

Langley doubled their advantage 10 minutes into the second half but the goal did not come without controversy.

Hudson mis-kicked his goal-kick to Papali and Chalvey claimed that he had handled the ball, but the striker played on and crossed low to White to convert from inside six-yards.

The Stabmonks were not without chances in the final, Sean Robinson saw a header from a Ryan Hazell corner well saved by man-of-the-match Harry Cusham, and the Langley keeper also kept out Bryan Taylor when through on goal.

Langley manager John Thirkell told the Observer: “It was absolutely fantastic and I thought we deserved it.

“It was evens-stevens in the first-half but without any shadow of a doubt we were the quality team in the second-half. We dealt with the conditions and worked hard.

“The back four were tremendous and the keeper absolutely outstanding. The midfield never stopped working and up top we were livewires as normal.

“It was a fair result in a good game. There was plenty of support here and everyone must have enjoyed it.

“We’re always confident because we’ve only lost one game all season. The confidence is there because it’s all about enjoyment and I keep on preaching that all the time.

“When you score that goal and you get that excitement within you, you should feel like that all the time when you play football for 90 minutes and forget your worries.

“You go out and give it your all for 90 minutes and that’s what these lads did.”

He continued: “We were in control for the first 20 minutes but then Chalvey took control in the second half of the first period. They had more of the ball than us and we kept on dropping back.

“Chalvey were winning all the second balls and we had a meeting with the lads at half-time and talked about that, as well as the pitch being heavy because of the rain.

“We did that in the second-half and came out ideal winners.

“I like excitement in the dressing room so told them it was still 0-0. We had a good first-half but had to make sure we won every tackle and header in the second-half, keep the ball a little bit better and work for each other, and that’s exactly what we did.”

Thirkell added: “Paolo Cicero as a captain, he is my coach as well, was exceptional in midfield and our keeper was outstanding.”
