CHALVEY Sports have their destiny in their own hands in Hellenic Division Two East after a 6-1 win against Abingdon Town on Tuesday.

The Stabmonks had to win at Arbour Park in midweek to remain in the race for the title and made the perfect start when Jamie Earis broke the deadlock inside two minutes.

Abingdon levelled the scores before goals from Ayden Coomber and Sean Robinson gave the home side a clear lead heading into the half-time interval.

Chalvey secured all three points thanks to goals from Earis, captain Ryan Hazell and Richard Jeffrey after the break.

The Stabmonks are now a point behind Abingdon United Development but with a game in hand on the league leaders.

Chalvey can win the title with a victory at Chalfont Wasps Reserves this Saturday (3pm) and if Abingdon fail to win at Penn & Tylers Green Reserves.

The Stabmonks manager Merv Lloyd told the Observer: “After 90 minutes I’m happy with the win, but we started very, very slow and it wasn’t until five minutes before half-time that we managed to bang in another couple of goals which gave us a little bit of breathing space.

“I definitely wasn’t happy with the way we started and, as I told all the lads in the dressing room, I was fuming. They were going to get it at half-time but they reprieved themselves and we got in at 3-1.

“It was still a problem because Abingdon were a decent side. They made the trip all the way over and, had they come out and scored early doors in the second-half, the game would have been back on.

“As the match settled in the second-half, we relaxed and were not rushing. We did what we do best, which is play football with the ball on the floor, and there was no looking back then. We banged in the rest of our goals which we needed to do.

“This was a game that we had to win. We could not have drawn this game. We may as well have lost it if we were going to draw and it gave us a little bit of passion.”

He continued: “We’ve had lots of games and people are getting a little bit tired physically and mentally they’re not quite with it on the pitch.

“We’re coming to the end of a long and testing season, but we’ve only lost one game in the league. We’ve drawn too many really but nothing out there on Tuesday would have done apart from a win.

“That said, we have got to push on now and we’ve got bigger fish to fry in our next two games because if we win both of those games we win the league.”

Chalvey lost top spot after a 3-3 draw against Long Crendon at Arbour Park.

Long Crendon took a narrow one-goal lead into the half-time interval and doubled their advantage after the break, before a goal from Bryan Taylor halved the deficit.

The visitors scored again, before goals inside the last 10 minutes from Earis and Billy Bressington secured a point for The Stabmonks.
