NICKY Shorey has signed for Reading FC for the second time in his career.

The 31-year-old has penned a one-year deal with the option to extend it by a further 12 months.

Left-back Shorey shot to fame with the Royals after making 286 appearances between 2001-08.

During that time he became the first Reading player to play for England in more than a century when he featured in two friendlies under Steve McClaren.

Shorey joins as a free agent having been released by West Bromwich Albion at the end of last season.

In a statement released by Reading, chairman Sir John Madejski said: "I would like to welcome Nicky back to Reading Football Club.

"He was an outstanding player here once before and we are looking forward to him triumphing even more this time around.

"I know the manager was very keen to have Nicky back, that makes a huge difference and so good luck to him once again."

The Romford-born defender has made more than 150 appearances in the Premier League with Reading, Aston Villa and West Brom, plus a brief loan spell with Fulham.

Shorey met up with his new Royals team-mates earlier today before taking part in a training session.

His dad, Steve, has worked for Reading for many years and is the current chief scout.

Boss Brian McDermott was keen to strengthen the left-back position, with veteran Ian Harte and Joseph Mills, 22, his other options.

What do you think Nicky Shorey will add to the Reading FC squad ahead of their return to the Premier League?
