SLOUGH Town FC joint-boss Neil Baker has described his side’s FA Trophy win at Margate as an ‘absolute bonus’.

The Rebels caused a major upset on Saturday as they shocked the Isthmian Premier Division leaders 2-0 in the first qualifying-round.

Baker and fellow manager Jon Underwood came up with a game plan to stifle big-spending Margate, which saw Slough switch to a 3-5-2 formation.

After first-half goals from captain Jamie McClurg and Scott Harris, The Rebels coasted to a comfortable win, according to Baker.

Speaking to Rebels Radio He beamed: “You could look at it and think that we’ve got the toughest draw possible at that stage to get Margate away.

“This is an absolute bonus for us because they’re a very strong side.

“It’s always nice to have a win under your belts, especially one that’s so satisfying against a side that are paying a lot of money.

“Margate were the favourites and have got ex-pro’s so it’s a real nice feeling. Everyone that got onto the pitch I thought was excellent.

“There were no performances that weren’t up to standards. It’s very harsh to separate anyone because they played as a team and worked so hard.

“For us it’s a bit of a bonus that we’re into the next round and hopefully we can get through another couple.

“We can enjoy the win and I’m delighted that we’ve done it, but now the focus is right on Paulton Rovers,” (Saturday, 3pm ko).

“It’s all very well doing it at Margate but we need to make sure that we put those types of performances in more often than not.

“You’re not going to be able to do it week-in-week-out but we want to put a number of those in this season.” Baker admits that he and Underwood were as comfortable as they had felt in a while in Rebels’ performance at Hartsdown Park on Saturday.

He explained: “We scored with one of our first attacks, and really settled down and grew into the formation.

“We were getting at Margate and had a number of chances. I felt that we were actually comfortable and it was a real good performance.

“We praised our players for their 45 minutes and said you’ve got to give exactly the same in the second-half.

“We knew that Margate would have to have a go at us. We just had to make sure that we were disciplined and kept our shape.

“We had to do the right things at the right times when we had the ball. I thought that we were excellent in the second-half.

“Margate were always going to have plenty of the ball, however we didn’t just sit back and soak things up.

“We had three of four chances which would’ve actually put the game to bed.

“Terry Brown said that Margate could play for another half hour and they wouldn’t score.

“I don’t know it that’s a criticism of his strikers or the fact that we were keeping them out.

“At the end of the day we have kept a clean sheet at probably one of the strongest sides in step three.

“I felt that we were under control and exceptional on Saturday.” The only sufferance to Slough was in injury to captain Jamie McClurg, who was forced off and replaced by Jake Parsons in the first-half.

Baker bemoaned: “Jamie’s a big player for us. He’s a hard worker but Jake came in and did just as well, we’re delighted with him.

“It’s a blow to lose Jamie but hopefully it is not serious. We’re hoping it’s just a dead leg as opposed to a knee problem.

“I think first-off we thought it was another knee injury, I was worried about him, but we’ve got our fingers crossed.” Baker added: “We’re a little bit disappointed with the referee over a number of decisions. I actually spoke to him at half-time and after the game.

“Normally when you’re two-nil up it’s very rare that you actually go over and talk to a referee.

“Normally you’re in a pretty good mood, but I just felt that he was lenient and let a number of challenges go on our lads.

“He gave them a number of free-kicks and I felt that he didn’t really give us an awful lot at all in the first-half.

“There were a couple of challenges that we are desperately disappointed that we didn’t get a free-kick, but that’s what it is."
