ZAHEER 'Bobby' Sher hailed Slough CC's team unity after an impressive five-wicket win against North Mymms on Saturday.

Slough have been the surprise package in Home Counties Division One this season, third in the table courtesy of a six-match unbeaten run dating back to June 22.

And they strengthened their lofty position at Upton Court Park when comfortably chasing down relegation-threatened North Mymms' modest target of 182.

"It was another good win," skipper Sher told the Observer. "We're pressing the button at the moment and all our hard work is starting to pay off.

"More and more people are getting involved and we're playing better as a team, that's shown in the last six results.

"We're taking it game by game but working very hard as a unit. The guys enjoy playing with each other and, if you continue to do that, eventually results go your way." The Slough skipper's decision to bowl first was rewarded when Hamza Qayyum was dismissed without troubling the scorers.

Fellow opener James Johnston (1) soon followed before Zulfiqar Butt (4-75) broke the stumps of Rhys Carter (0) and Andy Lewis (4).

Stephen Snell (41) offered some resistance, and a 50-run partnership between Caleb Stewart (50) and Neil Bamford (25) restored respectability to the visitors' score.

Prithviraj Sarvaiya (30*) added some crucial late runs, but the hosts were always confident of chasing a below-par score on their own wicket.

Sher said: "Zulfy and Raja Nawaz (2-37) were superb again, they're still fasting but applied pressure on the batsmen. Apart from Stephen Snell, who has played first-class cricket, no-one could cope with them.

"North Mymms really should've been all out for 120. 'Zulfy' dropped Snell with an easy caught and bowled chance and I put down their number 11 (Jason Bryceland) with the score on 150." Slough looked like they were going to make hard work of the run chase when the fourth wicket fell for just 44 runs.

But, that brought skipper Sher (66*) to the crease and his stand of 135 with Shaan Khan (77) secured victory after three balls of the 51st over.

"Nabil Shah (19) and Waqas Hussain (13) got us off to a good start but we had a mini collapse after two very dubious lbw decisions," added Sher.

Slough travel to Tring Park this Saturday (11am start) before mouth-watering clashes with Banbury (August 17) and league leaders Henley (August 24).

Looking ahead, Sher speculated: "Tring beat us in the first round in a tight game we felt we should've won. They're a good side so it will be a tough test for us but we're looking forward to the challenge.

"Winning the title will be a big ask because Henley have been top all year.

"Our aim was survival then a top-five finish, that's still the case. If we could achieve that it would be brilliant, but second would be fantastic." **PICK up a copy of the Observer, out now, for all the latest sports news and action** **FOLLOW the Observer on Twitter @Observer_sports**
