ALPHA Arms Academicals FC lifted the Mary Wells Memorial Cup after a 3-1 final win against Royale Cippenham at Holloways Park last Thursday.

The Arms were completing a cup double in the space of 10 days following their historic success in the Berks & Bucks Sunday Junior Cup.

They had thrashed Royals 8-1 earlier this season but a repeat of that scoreline soon diminished when an early backpass from Danny Bulman fell short of keeper James Betts.

Mark Burton pounced on the loose ball and chipped over Betts into the empty net, giving his side hope of a massive upset.

It took Alpha a while to find their rhythm, but they did draw level on the stroke of half-time as Alfie Clark scored with a close range effort.

Clarke scored a similar effort on 53 minutes to put Alpha in front for the first time, and they sealed the win when Konnor Saunders found the back of the net with a 20-yard half-volley on 65 minutes.

Alpha could have inflicted more pain on Cippenham late on but Carl Dennison produced some heroic defending to deny Saunders and John Brennan with goal-line clearances.
