BURNHAM FC boss Gary Meakin has challenged his side to score more goals as they look to climb the Southern Premier Division table.

The Blues endured a winless Bank Holiday weekend, losing 3-1 at The Gore to Poole Town on Saturday.

They then recovered from falling two goals behind at home to draw 2-2 with Hungerford Town on Monday, leaving them in 20th place in the table.

Speaking to the Observer, Meakin admits his side were short of confidence at the start of the season.

But he has now targeted a more clinical approach in front of goal to punish opposing teams.

He said: “People that have been at games will have a different view to those just looking at results.

“We just need a little bit of confidence and belief, rather than thinking we’re just here to make up the numbers.

“Results can’t keep going the way they are because we’re playing well enough. I’m pleased, but we just need to be more clinical and punish teams when we’re on top in games.

“We’ve learnt a lot from the first six games and have changed how we play a little bit.

“It’s about staying in the game for as long as possible, rather than trying to win it from the start.

“The players are good enough, we’ve just got to prove it and take our chances.’’ Jack Hutchinson gave Burnham a 10th minute lead against Poole, who levelled via Josh O’Hanlon before the break.

The league leaders went ahead via Michael Walker on the hour mark, and then secured victory when Brad Hewitt turned the ball into his own goal in the closing stages.

Goals from James Clark and Mark Draycott saw Hungerford into a clear lead after 37 minutes on Monday.

Burnham hit back with a Nathan Poulton penalty before half-time, and then rescued a point when Jordan Ajanlekoko equalised on 90 minutes.

Meakin commented: “Hungerford should’ve been out of sight because we weren’t at the races at all.

“We were given a gift with a penalty that probably wasn’t and should’ve won the game in the second-half. Hungerford were hanging on.

“I’m pleased we showed character, rather than wetting ourselves and losing three or four nil.” The Blues travel to Hereford United tomorrow (Saturday, 3pm) and Meakin warns it will not be easy for his side.

He said: “Hereford are a very young side who like to play football and will keep going for 90 minutes. They’re training full-time.

“If we take our chances we can kill the game off but, with their never say die attitude, they will always be in the game.

“It’s not going to be easy, but Hereford are in the league of teams we need to beat and we need to start picking up points.” **PICK up a copy of the Observer, out now, for Burnham FC match pictures** **FOLLOW the Observer on Twitter at @Observer_sports**
