BURNHAM Beeches Seniors made a flying start to the East Berkshire season with a 9-1 win at Windsor Great Park on Saturday.

Seniors’ boss Simon Hudell spoke about winning trophies to his players before kick-off, and they answered his calls with a resounding victory.

He told the Observer: “It was a good way to start the season. We knew what we had to do and the boys reacted well to a few conversations we had.

“Windsor had some old faces and some good players but, on the day, I don’t think they gelled that well.

“It was a spectacular result, but they could’ve put up more of a fight. I think their heads dropped when it got to four or five.

“Jason Marney is a Premier Division player on his day, one of the best strikers around and un-playable on Saturday.” Marney was the star of show with a four-goal haul, but his team did have to come from behind at Windsor Great Park.

The home side took the lead in the League Cup first round tie as a speculative 25-yard effort by Jake Hitchens eluded keeper Darrel Jones.

Parity was restored within two minutes, though, when Phil Donlon scored from close range.

Burnham took control of the tie from then on with Marney a constant nuisance for the Park defence.

He scored his first, and was then fouled inside the box with Jamie Patterson converting the resulting penalty.

Patterson doubled his tally with a header from a corner, and then Marney and Richard Earl made it 6-1 at the interval.

Earl grabbed his second in the second-half, whilst Marney completing is hat-trick with aplomb before adding a fourth goal late on.

Burnham take on Iver Heath Rovers Reserves this Saturday (2pm ko), and Hudell is setting his sights on the Division One title this season.

He said: “We played Iver back in pre-season and scraped a win, they’re quite a good side.

“We know what we need to do this season and hopefully we can turn up again as we did on Saturday.

“We’re not here to make up the numbers, we are here to win silverware and I consider us to be a contender.

“We know we can and the pre-match talk on Saturday was to give the players a bit of a kick up the backside.

“Both league and cup would be nice, and the feedback that we’ve got from the players is that’s their aim as well.

“We’re a team of successful players and just want to carry that on.

“I’ve not seen Barley Mow play, I don’t know much about them but they will definitely be a competitive side.” Hudell continued: “We had a large squad in pre-season so everyone was playing for their positions.

“It was a difficult time trying to shuffle 22 players, but we have gelled now it’s out of the way.” **PICK up a copy of the Observer, out now, for all the latest sports news and action including more from our exclusive East Berkshire League coverage** **FOLLOW the Observer on Twitter at @Observer_sports**
