BURNHAM FC manager Gary Meakin insists that his players are growing in confidence this season.

The Blues conceded a two-goal half-time lead in a 2-2 draw with Truro City on Saturday.

Meakin told the Observer that a point was ‘difficult to accept’ having been in a winning position at The Gore.

However, he admitted that a draw was a fair result, and that Burnham will benefit from it when Bideford visit next Tuesday.

Meakin stated: “It’s a difficult one because we would’ve taken a draw before the game.

“Truro City aren’t a bad side and are up there in the table.

“But, after being two-nil up, it’s difficult to accept a point.

“Two-nil gives you a licence to go out and win the game, it only changes if we score a third.

“We weathered it well, but then they scored a scrappy goal, and at that point I did say Truro might get three after the way we have crumbled recently.

“I was happy with a draw at 2-2 with 15 minutes to go, but then we had glorious chances to go on and win it. We stood up to them and had chances to win the game. But it is definitely a point gained rather than two dropped.

“Overall, a draw was a fair result, and we’re beginning to believe in ourselves.

“The tide is starting to turn all of a sudden, it’s beginning to even itself out.” He added: “Bideford is a game that we will look to get points out of because we’re in and around them.

“We will go into the game with confidence, but we need to start putting points on the board from our performances.” After a delayed kick-off due to the officials arriving late, Blues started to get the measure of Truro and took the lead on 16 minutes.

Nicke Kabamba was played in by a looping pass and unleashed a 20-yard drive to give goalkeeper Kyle Moore no chance.

More chances followed midway through the first-half when Tom O’Regan side-footed into the net from 15-yards.

However, the Truro re-grouped in the second period and launched a sustained attack on the Burnham goal.

Blues’ defence creaked but held its shape to deal with the attack until Isaac Vassel poked the ball home on 53 minutes, just evading the fingertips of Alex Lynch.

Then Rob Farkins found an equaliser on 63 minutes when he headed in from a corner at the far post.

Burnham had chances to seal a win, their first at The Gore this season, but O’Regan failed to convert the best of them.

A point left Burnham in 20th position in the Southern Premier Division. They host Bideford on Tuesday (7.45pm ko).

Tomorrow (Saturday, 3pm), The Blues turn their attention toward the FA Cup and home tie against Canvey Island.

Meakin said: “It’s exactly what the FA Cup is all about, a chance to build confidence and a free game. It’s a chance to put the club on the map and put some money in the coffers.

“We are the underdogs because they’re an established side but we will try and win it right from the start.

“It’s up to Canvey Island to win the game, but we’re good enough to beat them."
