SLOUGH Wizards FC manager Simon Costello aims to give youth the chance to shine this season.

The Wizards are in their second term in the Thames Valley Sunday League having been formed after a breakaway from Manor Park.

Costello saw his side beat Slough Eagles 6-3 at Lascelles Park on Sunday, where Terry Edwards scored five and Ricky Barnet also netted.

The Wizards boss hailed the display as an all-round team performance despite not being at full strength.

He told the Observer: “It was total domination I think and, to be honest, it wasn’t even our strongest team.

“Obviously it was nice to win. We played really well and didn’t give up, and I’m so proud of everyone.

“We’ve got a big squad and played outstanding football. You can’t fault Jack Coe in midfield.

“We had a couple of teenagers play and every season we’re looking to give youth a chance. We want kids to progress.

“The win was definitely deserved but don’t take anything away from Slough Eagles. They did well and pushed hard for their goals.” The win sees Wizards move up into fifth position in Division Five but Costello admits it will be tough to topple leaders Langley Village.

He said: “We’re looking to challenge for the title but I think that Langley will run away with it.

“We want to finish in first position but they’re a strong side who shouldn’t be in this division.

“There is not much difference between us and Division One sides, they just put their chances away.

“We’re pushing for success because what’s the point in playing if you don’t want to win.

“It’s hard work but I refuse to back down and we’ve got kids that can jump in. I know that they’re ready.

“We’re not a club who recruits people just to sit on the bench, we’ve got a squad rotation system.

“Football today is about style and technique, and it’s important that kids come to training and learn about the game.” Slough Wizards travel to rival club SL Raiders in round one of the League Shield this Sunday (10.30am ko).

Costello admits that the competition is not high on their list of priorities this season, but he does still expect to win the tie.

He explained: “We’re really looking forward to it and I feel sorry for Raiders because we will be buzzing on Sunday.

“I will get the lads ready in midweek and want the kids to get some experience in games.

“The cup is not a priority for us but it’s a game that we do hope to win.

“That’s not negative and SL Raiders are there to be beaten, and that’s what I intend to do.

“We have played them already in the league and won 3-2, but it will be a different ball game on Sunday.

“If you don’t take your chances you don’t win and sometimes cup football knocks the wind out of players.

“The Raiders play nice football, they get the ball down on the floor and move it, so this will be tougher.

“But I’m confident that we can beat any team, we’ve just got to find a way of locking it down in defence.” **PICK up a copy of the Observer, out now, for all the latest sports news and action including pictures from Slough Wizards versus Slough Eagles** **STAY up to date with all the latest sports news and action on Twitter at @Observer_sports**
