BURNHAM Red Lion FC have progressed into the Bob Smith Trophy final after a 3-1 win away at Wraysbury Bentons on Sunday.

The Lion recovered from falling a goal behind in the first-half to roar past their Premier Division opposition at The Green in Wraysbury.

Dan Molloy levelled the scores before half-time and Lee Barney bagged a brace in the second period, setting up a mouth-watering final against New Windsor Social Club.

Speaking to The Observer, Burnham joint-boss Matthew Murphy believes that preparation was the key to his players’ success, and has backed them to go on and lift the trophy.

Murphy explained: “We had it in our minds that this was our big day and the boys were on their game from the moment we arrived.

“We talked about the game the week before and arrived an hour early. We were out on the pitch and warmed up before Wraysbury had turned up.

“Wraysbury are supposed to be the top dogs and we’re just happy with the win, but we were mustard and won the game comfortably.

“Wraysbury scored first, but we hit straight back and levelled from the restart. We were pressing and creating more chances.

“We had a proper good old chat at half-time and were confident that we were going to win the game.

“Wraysbury couldn’t get out of their half in the second period. We deserved to win 100 per cent and they will tell you that.

“It was just such a good team performance. We had our serious heads on as soon as we put our kits on and went out and done the business.” Looking ahead to the final, Murphy, who manages The Lion with Dan Hicks, commented: “I expect it to be a tough final but a very winnable one.

“We’ve watched New Windsor against Real Milan in the Ken Gomm cup and I think they’re a good side, but we’re pretty confident we can beat the best.

“I believe that we can win but New Windsor will be the favourites because they are the Premier Division side.” The Lion have already secured the Division One title in their first season as a football club, but Murphy is keen to add to their trophy haul.

He boasted: “We’ve already won the league title but want to win the last two matches and make sure we take every single point on offer.

“When we first started recruiting I thought that we had a good side, but I didn’t expect it to go this well.

“It’s gone better than I thought it would do and we’ve captured the league, but now I want to win all the cups.” **PICK up a copy of The Observer, out now, for all the latest sports news and action including pictures from Burnham Red Lion versus Wraysbury Bentons** **FOLLOW The Observer on Twitter at @Observer_sports**
