EXCLUSIVE: George Carman - my son can go all the way to the top

GEORGE Michael Carman can go to the very top in boxing, according to his father George Carman Snr.

Like father like son: George Carman Snr, right, and son George Michael Carman are a picture of concentration as they make their way ringside ahead of the main event at The Centre, Slough on Friday night.

The third generation boxing sensation won a second World Youth title in front of a vociferous hometown crowd on Friday.

And, despite admitting the double world champion was not at his best, Carman Snr believes there is more to come from the young star,

Speaking exclusively to the Observer, he said: "I could not ask for anything better, I couldn't be happier.

"It is nice to win a second world title at a different weight. And it's also nice to win it in Slough.

"George has done it for the people of Slough, they are behind him."

He continued: "George is 20 years old, he's a baby in boxing but has done more than most people at his age.

"He has got a lot of improving to do, he's not all the way yet, he is not the finished article at all.

"We are not kidding or joking people, we know George will go all the way."

Carman was dealt an early blow against Adam Mate, suffering a cut above his right eye in the very first round, but battled back gamely to record a unanimous points win against the Hungarian.

Looking back over the bout, Carman Snr said: "There was a bit of pressure on George but we calmed him down and Jim [Evans, cut man] controlled the cut.

"George shared a couple of rounds and I think he lost a couple, but he was never in danger of losing - he controlled the pace all the way through.

"The only thing we were worried about were the cuts but George came through it. It's nice to come through when things go wrong in the beginning.

"Ten rounds was nothing to him, he could have gone another five or six which is pleasing."

Carman Snr - who also operates George Carman's Real Fight Promotions - added: "George showed that he can box and take a shot.

"Adam was no mug, he has won seven out of eight fights - he came to win.

"We gave Adam eight weeks notice and we only had five weeks training because George got married."

"Marriage has made George better actually because he is more settled and happy.

"He has got a very good wife behind him and she does not mind him boxing."

Carman Snr, however, admitted they took a chance taking on Mate because of an interrupted preparation.

"Adam had only lost to one person, Ricky Burns, so we knew he was a quality opponent - we knew he could punch.

"We took a chance because we never watched a video of him. We could not see one of Adam anywhere and did not have any footage of him at all.

"But, in this business, sometimes it is good to take chances because you cannot just keep kidding the fans by bringing journeymen over.

"Otherwise what good is it doing? If we bring someone over who is going to test George he can improve on."

Carman Snr, who was in his son's corner for on Friday night, went on: "George was only 50% of what he could have been.

"Any other time he would not have gone into the ring. But it was for a world title and people have come out to see him.

"George was on the toilet every 10 minutes, he could not keep anything in his stomach from the weigh-in - it was just going straight through him."

Carman Snr was also quick to praise Evans for the role he played in the boxer's corner during the mouth-watering title fight.

He added: "Jim is a very calm man in the corner.

"He was not pressuring George, he got in there and said, 'do not worry that is not a problem'.

"George Michael looks at Jim Evans as a second grandad, he is his grandad in boxing. We like having Jim in the corner because we trust him 100%."
