SOPHIE Papps believes a pair of promising performances at the Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix may have convinced selectors that she deserves a place in England’s 4x100m relay quartet at the Commonwealth Games.

Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow Athletics Club star Papps helped a British ‘B’ team storm to second place in the 4x100m relay at a transformed Hampden Park.

She then returned 24 hours later to record a season’s best 11.50 seconds in the individual 100m B-string race.

Britain’s victorious 4x100m relay squad will be minus Desiree Henry on their return to Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games as she heads to the world juniors in Oregon along with this year’s fastest sprinter Dina Asher-Smith.

And 19-year-old Papps, who represented Britain at the World Indoor Championships in Poland back in March, is hoping to get the nod to fill the vacant spot as part of England’s gold-medal chasing quartet.

“I hope I can get a run at the Commonwealths. I feel like I’m just coming into the shape I want to be in,” she said.

“I haven’t had the best season, but I’m looking forward to getting better and moving on from what I have already done.

“It’s lucky the Commonwealth Games weren’t in March for me, it wouldn’t have been good. They are still a bit earlier in the season than I would have liked but I’m really excited and hoping to get a run out.

“England definitely have a good chance of making the podium in the relay. We have some of the best sprinters in the world at the moment – everyone is in such good shape.

“British women’s sprinting has really come on this year, it’s amazing to see and I can’t wait to be part of it. I definitely think there is a medal hope, if not gold.” With just over a week to go before the Commonwealth Games kick off, Papps is looking to combine intensive training with a last-minute run in a minor competition.

Then she hopes to return to the Hampden Park track at Glasgow 2014 for a second chance to experience the excitement the Scottish crowd can offer.

“The track is really fast, I really liked it. Obviously it is brand new, so I don’t think anyone can have any complaints,” she added.

“The crowd got behind everyone, not just us. Hearing them cheer for Scotland was amazing. I’m glad to be back in the team. I’m really pleased with how both teams did.” Sainsbury’s is proud to support British Athletics through the Summer Series events and is committed to helping young people lead healthier, more active lifestyles.
