Ashleigh Ball

SLOUGH midfielder Ashleigh Ball has been selected in the England squad which left on Tuesday for the Champions Trophy in Sydney, starting next Saturday, writes Mike Haymonds.

Besides Ball, former Slough players Kate Walsh, the England captain, Alex Danson, Chloe Strong and goalkeeper Beth Storry are also in the squad.

The Champions Trophy is an annual tournament involving six of the world"s top-ranked nations and, although currently ranked eighth, England qualified for this year"s event, thanks to Great Britain"s sixth place finish at the Beijing Olympics.

The opposition in Australia is of the highest quality - world and Olympic champions the Netherlands, European champions Germany, Olympic bronze medallists and winners of last year"s tournament Argentina, hosts Australia and Olympic silver medallists China.
