PHOENIX have closed in on the BBO Championship title this season after an impressive 75-0 home win against Oxford on Saturday.

The home team entertained Oxford at their Institute Road base hoping to maintain their run of winning games, which now stands at nine matches, and their dominance at the top of the league.

They went into the game having had to make several changes from the selection last week, but spirits were high as kick-off loomed.

From the outset, Phoenix wanted to play a wide game against their opponents knowing they had fared well in the reverse fixture back in November, which they won 56-0 in wet and windy conditions.

The hosts took to the field and showed their intentions early on with the whole backline on fire, opening up the Oxford side time and again.

With the ever-present Kieran Roach and Alex Walsh both out through injury, Austin Leavy and Tom Pell stepped in to play at half-back with the influential Dave Harris moving into the back row as flanker.

It was not long before Leavy was on the scoresheet as he showed his pace to glide through the Oxford defence and open the scoring.

Although Phoenix were dominate in their approach to the game, credit must go to the visitors who never gave up, and good runs from their full-back and left winger had the home team on the back foot though the cover defence halted the Oxford repost.

The second try came from a clever kick from full-back Jason Townsend and a bad mix-up in the Oxford defence saw right winger Charlie Russell never give up the chase. His determination was rewarded with a try.

From the restart, Phoenix went on the attack again and a ghostly run from the outstanding outside centre Bradley Coomber saw him cross for the first of his two tries, and a commanding 19-0 after 20 minutes.

The hosts were now relentless with their forwards putting the Oxford scrum and lineout under immense pressure.

Good lineout play from returning second row Alex Jones and steals from hooker Robin Gill saw the latter make good ground. Again, quick ball allowed the backs to run a sweeping move and Russell crossed for his second score.

The second period went in the same vain as the first with Phoenix relentless in their play.

A quick flat ball saw Leavy make a decisive break and an inside pass to captain Tom Porter allowed his a clear run to the try line.

More good driving play from the home team's pack managed to get in behind the Oxford defence, and another quick ball and backline move found its way into the hands of debutant winger Alex McKeown. He crossed for his first try and a 50-0 lead.

More tries from Leavy, Coomber, Townsend and Harris ended a dominant game from Phoenix, who were in a ruthless mood and further strengthened their spot at the top of the league.

The win means Phoenix need only three points from the last two fixtures to secure the championship and promotion. Up next is a trip to second-placed Didcot on February 20.
