THE New Year could not have got off to a worse start for Slough and Phoenix Rugby Club's after both suffered heavy defeats on Saturday.

Slough's task of battling for survival in Southern Counties North became even more daunting after a heavy 65-5 defeat at promotion chasing Wootton Bassett, a result that leaves Paul Rendall's men 11 points adrift of safety.

Phoenix find themselves in a similar predicament in the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier Division, now four points below safety after losing 28-3 to new league leaders Thatcham in the all-Berkshire derby at Institute Road.

Elsewhere in South West One East, Maidenhead RFC took a huge step toward promotion with a 32-27 home victory over league leaders Cheltenham to reduce the gap at the top to just two points.
