AS TORRENTIAL rain continues to fall across Berkshire, local sport suffered another washout last weekend.

Saturday’s football fixtures were decimated by the floods with Burnham FC, Beaconsfield SYCOB and Holyport unable to play, while Slough Town’s clash at North Greenford United was also postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

However, a handful of fixtures in the East Berkshire and Thames Valley Leagues did beat the weather, where Maidenhead Magpies won 2-0 at Britwell in the Presidents Cup quarter-finals.

Rugby players were given a break due to an unplayable surface at Windsor, who were due to host table-toppers Oxford Harlequins, plus Drifters and Farnham Royal.

However, Maidenhead 2nds failed to capitalise on the 3-G surface at Braywick Park after a 26-8 defeat against Amersham & Chiltern.

Unfortunately for Slough Jets, they could not blame the weather for defeats to rivals Bracknell Bees and Swindon Wildcats over the weekend.

Jets were stung by the Bees 4-0 at The Hangar on Saturday and then lost 3-2 at Swindon on Sunday, leaving them ninth in the English Premier Ice Hockey League.

In front of a bumper crowd of 671, Slough were put on the back foot by two quick goals in the middle of the first period by the Bees.

Matt Foord opened the scoring at 9.23 and Grant Rounding doubled Bracknell’s lead seconds later.

A second stanza shut-out meant there was all to play for in the final period, but The Bees secured the points with further strikes from Rounding and Ivan Antonov.

Jets welcomed back Mindy Kieras and Andrej Vasiljevic for Sunday’s trip to Wiltshire, although they could do little to stop Aaron Nell scoring in the 19th minute.

Slough captain Kieras levelled with the only goal of the second period at 36.16.

Swindon restored their lead early in the final stanza through Sam Bullas, and went 3-1 ahead when Jan Kostal netted at 47.53.

To their credit, Jets stuck to the task and pulled one back through Ryan Webb in the 55th minute, but by now the Wildcats had done enough to secure the points.
