AS THE Slough Jets legends match gathers pace, more stars have been confirmed to return to the ice tomorrow (Saturday, 3pm).

After a couple of seasons as assistant coach for Slough Spitfires U16s, Gareth Ellis-Unwin was handed a Jets debut on his 16th birthday.

He became the first Slough resident to play for the senior squad but, sadly, his family moved out of the area and he only made five appearances.

Ellis-Unwin has since gone on to carve out a career in the movie business. A speedy rise through the ranks led him to the roles of assistant director and production manager on a number of drama and documentary projects.

He produced his first feature film Exam in 2009, which saw him nominated in the 63rd BAFTA awards, and his career took off in 2010 as producer of The King’s Speech.

The film was released in the UK in 2011 and, made with a budget of just £8 million, the film grossed around £250 million worldwide. The King’s Speech was a box office and critics success, and scooped many awards.

Ellis-Unwin picked up the Audience Award at Toronto International Film Festival; a Producers Guild of America award; seven BAFTAs including Outstanding British Film and four Academy awards which included Best Film.

Currently filming in Jordan, Ellis-Unwin is producing Kajaki, a true life story of a group of Para’s who became stranded in a Helmand Province minefield in 2006.

The film is supporting the work of The British Legion and Help For Heroes, and will hopefully be released later this year.

Ellis-Unwin said: “It’s a real honour to get to skate with so many Slough legends.

“As the first kid from Slough to play for Slough, I always looked up to these guys growing up. It’s very cool to think I might get to fill their water bottles on the bench on Saturday.” Mark Denholm commented: “For us to have Gareth playing in the game is an honour. It’s a testament to what Gary Stefan built back in 1986 that Gareth still holds such an affection for Jets to fly in especially for this match.

“The minute Gareth heard of the game he put his hand up and said he would be involved despite currently working on a film.” Now retired, Adam Bicknell enjoyed a 16-year professional career. He learnt his hockey within the John and Pauline Rost Slough junior development programme and made his Jets debut in the 1996/97 season.

He was a full-time Jet from 1998 and won the British National League (BNL) in his first season. Bicknell was club captain between 2003-05 and made 268 appearances for the club.

Canadian Jason Kendall is another ex-captain and was a huge defensive presence. As well as his defensive skills he chipped in with some big goals and was not afraid to drop the gloves whenever needed.

He arrived in the 1998/99 season, and was a part of the BNL title-winning squad that went undefeated at home all season. Kendall returned for two further seasons before his retirement and return to Canada. He made 100 appearances as a Jet.

He said: “I’m really excited that I will be back in Slough to participate in this exciting event. My three years at The Hangar were a ton of fun.

“I’m looking forward to re-connecting with old teammates and supporters.” End of season award winner in 2013, Michael Wales has confirmed his return to The Hangar following a shock release midway through last year.

After a highly successful career at Milton Keynes Lightning, Wales was signed by Slava Koulikov in 2012 and appointed club captain.

He soon silenced any sceptics and became a firm fans’ favourite. His on-ice play and off-ice appeal saw him re-signed in 2013 but surprisingly released after just 20 matches.

Wales went on to sign for Basingstoke Bison and helped them to the English Premier Ice Hockey League play-off and Premier Cup double. He made 74 appearances as a Jet.

Former alternative captain Matt Towalski will also join the Legends Match tomorrow. He made his Jets debut in the 2000/01 season and stayed with the club for five years before a switch to MK Lightning.

After seven seasons, Towalski returned in the 2012/13 campaign but, with no Jets team to re-sign for this year, has joined Bracknell Bees. He played 108 games in a Slough jersey.

Peter Quiney played on the left wing for Slough Jets. He began his senior career at hometown club Streatham Redskins and joined Slough in the 1989/90 season following a year at Richmond Flyers.

He retired after the 1993/94 campaign but has made comebacks as recently as the 2011/12 season. Quiney played 127 matches for Jets.

Scottish born defenceman Robbie Henderson started his career at Ayr Bruins and made his way to Slough via Telford. He played for Jets between 1991-93 with a total of 45 appearances.

Henderson returned north of the border and has played with Paisley Pirates as recently as last season.

Danny O’Hanlon hails from Wokingham but learnt his hockey at Richmond. He landed at Slough in the middle of the 1994/95 season where he stayed for two years.

The forward made exactly 100 appearances for the club and announced his retirement after the 1996/97 season.

Money raised from the Slough Jets Legends Match will go to Special People On Ice (SPICE) and The Lymphoma Association. Tickets for the match and evening celebration at Copthorne Hotel (7pm) can still be purchased from Absolutely Ice reception.
