SLOUGH TOWN FC joint boss Neil Baker expressed his relief after watching his side chalk up their first win of the Southern Premier season in emphatic style.

Rebels hammered Histon 7-1 at Holloways Park on Tuesday night for their first three points of the league season.

Scott Harris and Lewis Putman both scored hat-tricks in the rout which came three days after Harris had netted a last-gasp equaliser at Stratford Town.

And Baker also confessed that beating Histon also helped ease the pain of their 5-1 defeat at Biggleswade Town a week earlier.

He told the Observer: “It was a great and much-needed victory. We hadn’t started the season as we had wanted and we got bashed at Biggleswade last week. But we were fantastic on Tuesday. We created 24 chances and could have won by more.”

He added: “Getting that first victory takes the monkey off our back. We also played well at Stratford and our equaliser was deserved.

“We’ve had one bad night at Biggleswade but beating Histon means we are back in a positive goal difference, two points off the play-offs and looking to build from here.”

Rebels travel to Hitchin Town this Saturday (3pm) and Baker confirmed injury-doubts Gary McDonald and Nathan Webb should be available.

He also stressed: “We have four other players still finding their fitness and we will get stronger in the weeks ahead.”
