SLOUGH have emerged from their enforced mid-season break with deserved 1-0 win against Hitchin Town on Saturday.

For The Rebels, it was a first competitive fixture since Boxing Day after a string of postponed league and cup matches.

Hitchin had their share of opportunities but they looked less cohesive than their hosts at Holloways Park.

The away team felt that they should have had a penalty in the first half when captain Callum Donnelly appeared to be wrestled down inside the box by Guy Hollis.

There was a sense that a goal was on the way and it arrived in the 43rd minute.

The ball was not cleared on the left side of Hitchin's goal and found its way to Lewis Putman in too much space. From an angle he fired across the face of goal to give keeper Charlie Horlock no chance.

While the pitch was perfectly playable, the last period of the match was played under only four of the six floodlights, but it was Hitchin that were left in the dark as half-chances came and went.

After the match Rebels' joint-manager Jon Underwood tweeted: "Massive win for us today against a good side and fully deserved. Superb effort and desire from every player. Hopefully the start of a good run."

Despite the win Slough have dropped one place to 13th in the Southern Premier Division table though they are just seven points off the play-off positions.

The Rebels travel to bottom-of-the-table Bideford on Saturday (3pm) after a Southern League Cup third round tie at Potters Bar Town on Tuesday.

Burnham have suffered a seventh straight defeat in Southern Division One South & West after a 1-0 loss to Taunton Town on Saturday.

The deadlock was finally broken at The Gore on 68 minutes by Taunton striker Lewis Powell, who added a second goal from the penalty spot in the 75 minute.

Luke Mann gave The Blues hope with a goal on 78 minutes but Taunton secured the points when Dominic Rhone diverted the ball into his own net eight minutes from time.

Burnham are away to Didcot Town on Tuesday (7.45pm) and then host Larkhall Athletic on Saturday (3pm).
