SLOUGH Town joint-boss Jon Underwood believe his team truly deserved their 2-0 win against King’s Lynn Town on Saturday.

It what could be their last competitive match at Holloways Park, goals either side of half-time from Lee Barney secured The Rebels all three points in their penultimate game of the season.

“It was a disappointing week before at Cambridge so we wanted to get the win, and obviously I am delighted to do so,” Underwood told the Observer.

“King’s Lynn are a good team in the top-half so it was a decent win for us.

“It was fully deserved in quite an open game, and Lee managed to get two goals so I’m pleased with that.

“It was another decent home performance and to be fair we have done well at Holloways Park recently.

“It is tough at Holloways Park at the minute, the pitch is uneven and bobbly, but we ground out a win.”

Slough started the better but King’s Lynn came closest to scoring early on when John Sands hit the post with a good strike from outside the area.

Liam Hurst went closer as his attempted lob from the edge of the area was cleared off the line by Warren Harris.

Against the run of play, the Rebels opened the scoring on 31 minutes when Barney coolly slipped the ball through the legs of keeper Alex Street.

Nathan Webb was unfortunate not to double the advantage in the second-half as his effort was ruled out for offside.

King’s Lynn increased the pressure late on but Slough made them pay for their missed chances with Barney adding a second goal two minutes into time added on.

The forward finished from close range after Lewis Putman beat his man and pulled the ball back across goal.

The win sees The Rebels remain in 16th position in the Southern Premier Division table ahead of their final match of the season away at Merthyr Town this Saturday.

“Merthyr will be a tough game. They’ve picked up in recent months and got up to mid-table,” said Underwood. “We watched them on Tuesday at Chesham and they were very good.

“It will be a good game on a 3-G surface, which we will have next year, and Merthyr look to play and get the ball down.

“They are a good side and we actually expected them to do better at the start of the season.”

He added: “To be fair, we wanted to be higher than where we are in the league.

"Our target was to finish in the top-half so we have not done that, but a win on Saturday would mean we’re not a million miles away from that.”
