SLOUGH Town's new-look squad got a good work-out in their opening pre-season friendly at Andy Ballard's Didcot Town, with the hosts running out 4-1 victors.

The scoreline was a little harsh on the Rebels in what was only their fourth session of pre-season training.

Slough found themselves two goals down after eight minutes, the first coming from a well-struck free-kick from Taylor Janes which Sam Bunting could not keep out, and the second a penalty kick from Mark Janes after some indecision at the back led to a foul on Ryan Brooks by the opening goalscorer.

Slough had been keeping the ball well up to that point, and recovered to pull one back through Charlie Moone, though there was more than a hint of offside about the goal and also Didcot protests about a possible handball offence in the build-up.

The Rebels controlled the rest of the half, though Didcot could have extended their lead before the interval after some hesitation gave them a chance that Sean Fraser cleared off the line.

In the second half Slough made a number of chances and with better finishing would have been comfortably back in the game.

Instead Didcot scored a third with a good turn and finish past James Warrington by Brooks.

The fourth goal was another penalty, very harshly given against Warrington, and Brooks bagged his second of the game as he stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way.

All in all there were plenty of positives for Neil Baker and Jon Underwood to reflect on with good ball retention, some good fitness levels from the players who played the full 90 minutes and the chances that the team created with no injuries suffered.

They may, though, have been disappointed with the scoreline and the manner in which Slough conceded a number of the goals, albeit with a number of new players who are learning each others' games.
