JON Underwood has spoken of the belief that Slough Town have coursing through their veins after a fifth straight win sent them top of the Southern Premier Division this week.

The Rebels ended a four-match losing run against Redditch United with an impressive 4-0 win at The Valley on Saturday.

In-form Warren Harris scored either side of the break with strikers Lee Barney and Gavin James bagging the other two.

Slough found it tougher at Weymouth on Tuesday evening but a late Harris goal – his fifth of the season – secured a 1-0 victory at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

“It’s just fantastic to be honest, to go top in these early days.” a delighted Underwood told the Observer. “We’ve got a lot of belief at the moment because of the run we have been on.

“When you’re on a tough run losing becomes a habit and visa versa, but winning is a good run to be on as it breeds confidence.

“We’re tough to beat on the road and hard to score against. We’re hard to break down and have that cutting edge at the other end, and when you get that balance right you can start to win games.

“We’ve been in this division for over two years now and have normally been looking at the mid-lower end of the table.

“This time last year we were in a terrible position and we had to try and make changes to the squad to turns things around, but now things are different and it’s fantastic.

“It [top of the league] is a great position to be in but we’re not stupid, we know we can’t always win.

“When we do lose it will be about how we react and get on another run, but at the moment we’re enjoying it.

“We’re nine games in and that’s a fifth of the season, so we’re top on merit. It really puts you in a position to go on a long winning run.”

Slough ended the hoodoo that both Redditch and Weymouth had over them in recent seasons, and now top the table on goal difference ahead of Dunstable Town, with the two high-flyers set to clash on October 11.

But for now joint-manager Underwood is happy to keep on recording wins and clean sheets.

“Before the weekend we looked at it as two very tough games so to come away with six points and two clean sheets is more than we expected, which is fantastic,”explained Underwood.

“They were two very different matches. On Saturday against Redditch we were thoroughly in control of the game and very dominant.

“But Weymouth are very strong and it was the best performance from a team against us this season.

“We were slow to get going, but it’s tough after a hard game on Saturday and having to sit on a coach for two hours when the players have already been to work.

“Weymouth will argue that we didn’t deserve to win but one goal was always going to win it, like at Banbury earlier in the season.

“We felt we could have won that day and this time we have, so these things even themselves out during the course of a season.”

Slough turn their attention towards the FA Cup this Saturday tomorrow and a second qualifying round tie away to Cambridge City at 3pm.

Cambridge have not made as good a start to the new season, they currently sit 19th in the Southern Premier Division with nine points from the same number of matches.

They lost 4-0 at home to Hitchin Town on Monday night, but they did beat The Rebels 4-2 when the two sides last met in the league back in April.
