GAVIN James is revelling in his football as Slough Town reignited their promotion push with back-to-back wins at Arbour Park this week.

Slough beat Dunstable Town 1-0 on Saturday and followed up with an impressive 3-0 victory against Weymouth on Tuesday.

James scored twice in the midweek win, taking his tally for the season to 12, and he believes the results prove the Rebels are up for the challenge of winning promotion.

“That was probably our best performance of the season,” the striker told the Observer.

“We were compact, our shape was good and we didn’t really look like we were going to concede. We got three goals so it was a good result.

“At the start of the season we started quickly in our home games. We went off the boil a little bit, but on Saturday and Tuesday we started quickly again. We got ahead early and never really looked back.

“We played well against Dunstable on Saturday but it was a little different because it was a tighter game.

“On Tuesday, once we got ahead, space started to be created and we began to move the ball around. The more we moved it the more space started to be created.

“It’s just enjoyable to be out there playing really.”

James opened the scoring against Weymouth with an early penalty and put the icing on the cake with a header, with in-form Chris Flood bagging the second goal.

“It’s always good to get goals,” said James. “I never really set too many targets but I just want to stay fit now until the end of the season having missed so much.

“I want to contribute to getting up the league and hopefully promotion.”

On the push for promotion he commented: “We said on Tuesday how tight it is at the top and if we got the three points it would really put us back in the mix.

“We started 2017 quite badly but these two results have put us right back up there again.

“When we beat Leamington everyone got some confidence and we thought we were really going to push on. Kings Lynn was a little bit of a dip and we thought have we gone backwards.

“This week we’ve shown we’re right up for the challenge. It’s a long season and we’ve still got a lot of games to go but we want to be right up there. There’s a long way to go but we just need worry about our results and keep on winning.

“We have got a lot of games to play against teams in the bottom half and they’re the ones we’ve got to make count.

“It is in our hands to go and do well really, so it’s up to us now.”
