CHRIS FLOOD hopes he will be the man to fire Slough Town to promotion from the Southern Premier Division this season.

Flood signed for Slough from Gosport Borough in December 2016 and scored 12 goals in 24 appearances as The Rebels reached the play-offs before losing to Leamington in the semi-finals.

The striker has bagged four goals in an unbeaten pre-season campaign, including the winner in the 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, and he is targeting 30 goals this season.

Speaking to the Observer after the win, Flood said: “It’s always nice to hit the back of the net but it doesn’t count for anything until the season starts.

“I have got four goals in the five games that I’ve played, so that’s positive, and I’m just looking forward to the season, it should be good.

“I always set myself targets, most seasons I go for 20-25 goals, but I’m going to stretch myself this year and hope for 25-30.

“I missed three months of the season last year and scored 20+ goals so I’m hoping that, if I can keep myself fit, I should be getting close to 30, so fingers crossed.”

On the Rebels’ ambitions, he said: “Promotion is what we all want and the reason I stayed here.

“We were really close last year but fell away towards the back end. We didn’t really want it if I’m completely honest. Our form dipped when we went into the play-offs and we lost.

“Hopefully this year we can do more of the same but kick on and try to get promotion.”

Commenting on the win against Premier League club West Brom, Flood said “It was a good game and we played some pretty good stuff to be fair. They didn’t bring their first team or anything like that but we played some good football I thought.

“It’s surprising that you get a bit of time when you play teams like that, so it was good that we used that to our advantage.

“We sat back when they had the ball and I thought our shape was really good. We broke on the attack and I thought scored two good goals.

“Warren Harris’ was a decent goal, and for mine, Manny Williams shot and I just got in there to tap it in really, but the build up was good, it was positive.

"We were the better team to be fair, especially in the second half. I thought we dominated possession.

"Even in the first half the only real option they had was the one they scored from and that was a long ball over the top.

"Going back to our shape, I thought it was really solid and everyone put in a really good shift."
