NEIL BAKER hailed his side’s performance after Slough Town bounced back from a rare defeat to win 4-1 at Redditch United on Tuesday.

Slough suffered only their second defeat of the season when losing 3-1 at St Neots Town on Saturday, after which Baker admitted The Rebels were out-played.

Slough had to recover from falling a goal behind against Redditch, but showed real character to reproduce the sort of performance that had previously saw them win eight matches on the spin.

Speaking to the Observer, joint-manager Baker said: “We had to show good character after a poor performance on Saturday, which have been few and far between this season, and you do worry a little bit about how you will bounce back.

“But, there was a massive difference in midweek and it was a top performance from us.

“The football we played in the second half especially was top draw. It was a comfortable win in the end and it could have been by more.

“We had Jack Turner to thank on a couple of occasions because at times in the first half he made some great saves.

“It was a pleasing performance from everyone. We worked hard and did what we had to do.

“Work rate means a lot in this league because when you do come off your game slightly teams will punish you and that’s exactly what happened on Saturday. St Neots out-worked us.

“We had to show real character in midweek, especially after going a goal behind, but the performance was great and we managed to score great goals.

“It was the perfect response and important to get the win because we don’t have another league game for 11 days.”

Redditch broke the deadlock at The Trico Stadium when Dior Angus, the son of former Rebels Terry, beat two defenders to score on 17 minutes.

The lead did not last long though as Slough striker Chris Flood bent the ball past keeper Ethan Ross from around 12-yards just seven minutes later.

The visitors went into the half-time interval ahead after Manny Williams rose highest to head in a Warren Harris cross in the 44th minute.

Flood bagged his second goal of the match, and eighth this season, nine minutes after the restart.

Harris headed a cross from George Wells into the path of the forward who smashed the ball past Ross.

Midfielder Harris put the icing on the cake when managing to poke home a Josh Jackman long pass on 67 minutes for his first goal of the campaign.

Commenting on the defeat at St Neots last weekend, Baker said: "We got out-played on the day. Quality is a big thing in football but work rate is also massive.

"If I'm honest we were not at the races in terms of our work rate on Saturday. St Neots out-worked us and again we had Jack to thanks at times to keep it at 3-1.

"We did the easy thing and played the ball long which is not what we're about.

"We've been making a lot of changes in every game but there was only one enforced on Saturday. So we went with what we had against Dulwich but it just didn't happen for us.

"Football is a mental game at times and perhaps the players thought it would be comfortable and we would win the game. If you let that complacency get into your head and game it can affect you at times and that was the case on Saturday."

Slough turn their attention toward the FA Cup and a home third qualifying round tie against National South club Poole Town this Saturday (3pm).

The Rebels are then away to Beaconsfield Town in round one of the League Cup on Monday (7.45pm).
