SLOUGH Town joint-manager Jon Underwood has hailed the professional performance his side produced to win 4-1 at St Ives Town on Tuesday.

The Rebels had not won away from home in three matches and they fell behind to a Peter Clarke goal after 27 minutes at Westwood Road.

However, Slough responded to take a lead into the half-time interval thanks to goals from midfielders Simon Dunn and Warren Harris, before forwards Ben Harris and Manny Williams secured all three points after the break.

Underwood told the Observer: “I was really pleased and thought it was a very professional performance.

“There has probably been quite a bit made of our away form and our ability to perform on the more rough pitches, but I think this year we’ve not done too bad and done pretty well in these types of matches.

“We flew out of the traps and could have been three goals ahead after 15 minutes, and that’s not easy when you’ve been sat on a coach for so long.

“Full credit to our lot they got there heads on and did the right things well.

“We were caught with a sucker punch and we could not believe it because we were so completely dominant.

“We showed good character to pull back and were in front at half-time, which was no less than we deserved.

“We controlled the game from start to finish and the guys done the right things, so we deserved to win the game.

“We were sensible in our approach and the lads worked their socks off. We created a lot of chances and were very much deserved winners.

“St Ives were second best all night and their manager admitted that, so it was a good all round performance.”

The win means Slough remain in fifth position in the Southern Premier Division ahead of a trip to Basingstoke Town this Saturday (3pm), before making the trip to promotion-rivals Weymouth next Tuesday (7.45pm).

Their hosts are two of the most in-form teams in the league and Underwood would accept four points out of the six on offer now.

He said: “I would be delighted with four points because we’ve got two difficult games coming up.

"Basingstoke’s home record is up there with the best in the league and they will be full of confidence after beating Hereford at home.

"Basingstoke are a good young side who are in really good from at the moment, and beat us at their place last season.

"Weymouth are in great form in the league and are very good at home.

"Four points would be a brilliant return because we're going at two points at game at the moment."

Slough signed midfielder Scott Davies from Chelmsford City last week and handed him a debut in the win at St Ives on Tuesday, while centre back Matt Day has signed on loan from Wealdstone for the rest of the season.

Underwood said: "Matt is a centre back who captained Hungerford to promotion out of this league from the play-offs. He's the type of character we will need.

"We've lost Alan Inns because he requires an operation next week, so Matt is a direct replacement for him.

"We've got a real experienced group and a good age, but the more experience and good characters we have can only help.

"It's not secret that we've not quite been firing on all cylinders in recent months, sometimes we have but on other occasions we've not.

"It's about getting the players fired up, making them look over their shoulders and getting that extra five or 10 per-cent out of them performance-wise.

"Scott’s debut was very good and all the lads were impressed with his performance."
