Sponsored by PedalSure Cycling may seem like a pretty solitary activity to the outsider: you get on your bike, ride around by yourself and then get off again. However, there’s no reason why this should be the case, and the rise of cycling clubs in and around London is beginning to paint a more interconnected picture of the sport.

Especially with the massive surge of ‘cycle-phoria’ in the last few years, there’s no shortage of clubs that you can join that will suit your needs, whether you’re searching for some fierce riding competition, or you’re just looking for a bit of company of your daily cycling adventures.

In this article I’m going to hopefully get the lowdown on some of the biggest and best cycling clubs you can join in your area.

Kingston Wheelers: Situated in South London, the Kingston Wheelers, despite the pretty dire name, is a self-appointed ‘medium-sized’ cycling club that caters to cyclists of all performance levels. This is great for cycle club novices who don’t want to feel out of place, but even if you’re a veteran you should be able to find people worthy of your cycling prowess! The Wheelers run regular Sunday morning cycle runs and club nights in Kingston, and have a team of dedicated helpers to give you advice on all cycling issues.

Their website can be found here: www.kingstonwheelers.co.uk Twickenham Cycling Club: The Twickenham Cycling Club is, as suggested by the name, based in West London and has benefitted hugely from the serene surroundings of places like Surrey and Berkshire. If you’re looking for a London cycling club without the dangers of city riding, then going a little bit further out can drastically improve your cycling experience.

For the recreational cyclist the club offers scenic routes and rides, while they also have access to Surrey’s League Road Racing routes for the more professional riders who want to do some serious training. The TCC is quite a good competitor when it comes to road racing and has renowned women and children clubs too, making it a great way to get the whole family involved.

Being such a big club means there’s no shortage of events, whether this is directly from the club or just an impromptu gathering by members - there’s always be some sort of cycling activity to get in on.

Their website can be found at: www.kingstonwheelers.co.uk London Phoenix Cycling Club: The London Phoenix Cycling Club is another one with a friendly ‘anyone with a bike can enter’ attitude, and is a club to suit all genres of riders. They have dedicated mountain, road, racing, and cyclocross sections and are a pretty informal bunch. The LPCC has a website forum where they arrange all of their weekly events, and also hold monthly gatherings at a variety of venues. The club also has a sizeable women’s presence and take part in competitions and casual rides in locations all over London.

See their website here: www.londonphoenix.co.uk Spartans Velo Club: The Spartans are a very British cycle club who cater mostly to the older generation of bike-riders, but are still open to younger members. Based in North London, the club focuses on trying to increase your bike handling skills and benefits from a training team with Olympic and Commonwealth games experience.

The Spartans only started last year but is growing substantially, and, for those of you that like that sort of thing, will soon have their own club kit. The club holds all sorts of events and is open to any level of rider, although it does seem like this is a pretty serious club so you may want to find something a little less professional if this is your first foray into club cyling.

So there we have 4 of the best cycling clubs that I could find in the London area, all of whom will really accept any level of rider. Club cycling is a great way to get support with your cycling or just make it a little bit more sociable - not a bad thing in the freezing winter months when you need some encouragement to get out there.
