STUDENTS have been learning some vital life lessons to make sure they are ready for the world of work.

Year 10 students at The Westgate School have spent the week taking part in networking sessions, as well as ‘business mind’ and first aid sessions, in a drive to get young people ready for the world of work.

Entrepreneurs gave guest lectures and ran sessions with the students of the Cippenham Lane school to teach them about the importance of networking, before the pupils had the chance to do some networking of their own.

Rachael Burt, programme leader for the Slough-based Learning to Work which organised the event, said: “These events are valuable to the students to help them build a foundation in their understanding of how the working world works. 85% of jobs are gained via networking nowadays, and it really is the key thing for young people who are looking for employment.

“What we really try to teach them was that they’ve already created a network for themselves – because they’ll already know people through their families that have the potential to employ them, so it’s really up to them now to build on that.” x
