MEMBER of Parliament for Slough, Tan Dhesi, has returned from a two-week trip to India, in which Brexit was top of the agenda.

Throughout his trip, Mr Dhesi met with the Chief Ministers of the Punjab and Delhi regions, as well as a number of elected ministers for national Indian parties.

Mr Dhesi, speaking to the Observer, said: “In essence, this was a personal visit, but quickly became a public one. I spoke with government representatives in Punjab and Delhi, and raised issues of importance between both our nations, particularly building better relations post-Brexit.”

“We also discussed the possibility of setting up direct flights between Amritsar and London.”

Mr Dhesi was welcomed with hundreds of billboards and signs erected by local residents, celebrating the election of a Sikh to the UK Parliament.

Mr Dhesi said: “I was very overwhelmed and touched by the love and affection shown across the cities and towns. It’s spurred me on to work even harder for my constituency and my country.”

“The city that most touched me was without doubt Ludhiana, where there seemed to be a big hoarding or poster up on every other street that I drove past.”

Mr Dhesi also visited the cities of Amritsar, Delhi, and Jalandhar, in addition to his ancestral village of Raipur, where he met family and friends.

Mr Dhesi said: “I hope this visit will help bring both our nations closer together. We need to build upon our ties post-Brexit, and I hope this will help contribute to that.”
