AN LGBT forum for young people has hosted its third annual celebration, in time for LGBT History Month.

Spectrum, Slough Borough Council’s group for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender youth aged 13 to 19, hosted its ‘OUT!’ celebration at the Curve in William Street last Thursday.

Young people performed a range of songs for the crowd, before hearing a talk from the headteacher of the Creative Academy dance school, George Kirkham, who described his experience of growing up gay in Slough.

Mr Kirkham said: “Slough was a very different place in 1988, we didn’t have a group like this. A law called Section 28 banned local authorities from ‘promoting homosexuality.’

“The gay movement has moved on massively, thanks to organisations like Stonewall.

“We have to stand for freedom of speech, and being true to yourself.”
