People who are single and looking to get onto the property ladder are unlikely to consider Slough or Windsor and Maidenhead, research shows.

Zoopla calculated the most affordable places in England and Wales outside London for solo buyers - and found Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire came out top, with buyers needing to sacrifice 10.84 per cent of their monthly wage typically in mortgage payments to own a home there.

But Slough and Windsor and Maidenhead were among the most expensive, with buyers needing to sacrifice on average 33.69 per cent of their monthly wage to get on the ladder in Slough, and 32.74 per cent per month to get a mortgage in Windsor and Maidenhead.

The research was based on analysing the prices of one-bed flats - the property type a buyer who was single may be looking for - across England and Wales.

It assumed that buyers would have a 15 per cent deposit to put down and would be paying off their mortgage over 25 years. Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures local earnings figures were used to make the calculations.

Slough was in the top five for the most expensive repayments in the country while Windsor and Maidenhead came in at number 10 most expensive.
