A TUBE driver who faked his own death to claim a £150,000 service payment has been arrested.

Clever Busumani, 53, a tube driver, travelled back to his native Zimbabwe in 2011. Whilst he was there, his wife, Cynthia Chirairo, phoned his employers at TfL to say he had taken ill. She then later called them again to tell them he had died.

Chirairo attempted to give TfL a fake death certificate, however her claim was rejected. Insurance investigators gathered evidence to show that Busumani was actually still alive, leading to an arrest warrant being issued.

In 2015, Busumani was arrested in Heathrow Airport, with both he and his wife pleading guilty to fraud offences. However, Busumani fled the country before the end of his sentencing hearing. In his absence, he was sentenced to 16 months in prison, whilst his wife was given 12 months.

Despite the sentence, Busumani returned to the UK again, and was arrested in Slough on Thursday.

Busumani is now to begin serving his prison sentence, which has been extended by two months due to skipping bail.
