THE MAYOR has launched an ambitious plan to plant hundreds of trees throughout the borough.

The Mayor of Slough, Paul Sohal, explained: "Next year is the 550th anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. People from all over the world will be coming together to celebrate this event.

"I have been thinking about how I wanted to mark it. Guru Nanak was a great environmentalist, he spoke often about the importance of protecting animals and the environment. So I thought that planting 550 trees throughout the borough would be a fitting way of marking this occasion.

"I have been asking councillors throughout the area if they would like to contribute through their community investment funds. We have 42 councillors, so if each councillor plants five trees we will be halfway there. I have also been asking the Gurdwaras in Slough if they would like to contribute, and a number of other organisations. If they can plant one or two trees each, it will soon add up.

"I hope to start the planting in November, as that is the best time for planting trees."
