THE MAYOR joined volunteers to help feed the homeless.

Langar Aid, part of the Slough-based Khalsa Aid charity, holds a regular homeless feed every Tuesday on the High Street. Khalsa Aid is one of Mayor Paul Sohal's chosen charities for the year.

Dozens of homeless or poverty-stricken people queued up for the free meals, which included chips donated by local fish and chip shops, fresh fruit, ice cream, cereal bars, juice, biscuits, and bottled water.

Volunteer Indy Narwal, 28, of St Andrew’s Way, Slough, said: "We currently get up to 50 people here each week – we've had highs of around 65, but it is currently 45 to 50 each week, and ten or so down in Windsor.

"We try and get as many restaurants involved as we can. Today, our chips were donated by Burnham Fish and Chips and JKS Fish and Chips.

"The Mayor has chosen Khalsa Aid as one of his charities for the year, so we're very pleased to have him here, doing his bit.

Cllr Sohal said: "I chose Khalsa Aid as I have known Ravi Singh, the founder of Khalsa Aid, since 1999, when we were both on the management committee of the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara, on Sheehy Way. It was then that he first started talking about doing something long-lasting, that would show the world how Sikhs believe in one race. He started Khalsa Aid and I have been following it ever since. They do fantastic work. When the flooding in India happened, Khalsa Aid were one of the first organisations out there, helping people day and night."

Mr Narwal said: "Khalsa Aid is currently doing a lot of work in India due to the recent flooding. Our people are currently serving 8,000 meals a day over there – so any donations are much appreciated."
