Two Windsor and Maidenhead police officers have been commended for their selfless service with a Thames Valley Police Federation Bravery Award after they rescued a couple and a child from a vicious dog attack.

PC Sammy Luckett and Sergeant Larah Fisher were called to what appeared to be a domestic disturbance. When the pair arrived at the scene, they noticed a large dog on the balcony of the property which appeared calm.

When the officers approached the front door, they noticed blood. When a man answered the door, the dog started attacking him. As the dog attacked, PC Luckett tried to pull the man out of the property whilst Sgt Fisher went in to the property to protect the man’s partner and child.

The man was successfully pulled from the property, but the door closed behind him leaving the Sergeant in the property with the mother, child and the aggressive dog. PC Fisher battled with the dog before managing to open the front door.

Sgt Fisher managed to grab the dog by its collar despite an injury to her hand. The woman and her little girl were covered in blood at this stage and the officers screamed at them to get to another room in the house.

Sgt Fisher still had the dog by the collar but needed assistance. PC Luckett told her to let it go and to get out if she could. As soon as the dog was free it attacked the man again, so PC Luckett PAVA sprayed it and used his baton to try and bring it under some sort of control, eventually succeeding.

“We had absolutely no idea when we got there what was going to happen. Sgt Fisher was amazing because she held onto the dog in the house on her own,” PC Luckett said.

He added: “It’s an honour to be recognised with an award.”

Thames Valley Police Federation Chairman Craig O’Leary said: “Police officers never know what they will be called to and this just proves how quickly incidents can change from first appearance.

“Sgt Fisher and PC Luckett reacted incredibly quickly with a great deal of courage, and the family’s injuries could have been much, much worse. They did a fantastic job and we’re very proud of them both.”

The pair will attend an Awards Ceremony in the Thames Valley Policing area on Thursday 28 February where an overall winner will be announced.
