The death of a pedestrian in a hit and run crash in Wraysbury has inspired a former Royal Borough mayor to hit out at the authority - saying that his appeals for money to bring in safety precautions on the notoriously dangerous road were repeatedly ignored.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a vehicle collided with a 35-year-old pedestrian on the B376 Wraysbury Road in Wraysbury at 9pm on Sunday.

The vehicle failed to stop but a registration plate left on the scene led police to believe it had been a 4x4 pick-up style vehicle.

Cllr Colin Rayner, who has represented Horton and Wraysbury on the Royal Borough for 15 years, made his surprise comments two days after the crash.

He said: "This is the second death on this road I have had to face during my time on the council."

He said that during his time as mayor and as cabinet member responsible for highways he tried without success to persuade colleagues to allocate money for CCTV cameras and ANPR vehicle registration equipment Wraysbury Road, commenting: "They are prepared to spend £250,000 on a cafe for Dedworth but not on things that could save peoples' lives."

"I keep asking for funding for cctv and just get pushed back."

Cllr Rayner, who is Deputy Mayor of the borough this year, runs Berkyn Manor Farm in Stanwell Road, Horton and has served in the cabinet as lead member for highways for four years.

He is a familiar figure in and around Windsor in his distinctive bowler hat and is closely involved with the Royal Windsor Horse Show.

He has always been a man who speaks his mind and does not always toe the official Conservative party line but many were surprised when he was deselected this year - as part of a restructuring of the council's wards which has reduced the number of councillors by 14.

The identity of the man who dies in the accident has not been released yet. An inquest will be opened next week
