Buckinghamshire is one of the areas in the south east with the lowest number of smokers, figures reveal.

A total of 9.6 percent of the population in Bucks smokes, while the success rate of those who attempt to quit the habit is 2.19 per cent.

Wokingham has the lowest smoking rate nationally, as well as in the south east – with 8.1 per cent of the population choosing to smoke.

Bucks has the second lowest smoking rate in the south east, followed by Oxfordshire with 10.7 per cent, according to the Public Health England figures.

The low smoking rate across the south east has led to the region having the lowest number of smoking-related hospital admissions in England.

Despite the low smoking rates – a larger percentage of the population in some areas in the south east smoke.

Brighton and Hove has the highest percentage of smokers in the south east at 18 per cent, while Medway is the area with the second highest per centage of smokers at 17.6 per cent, followed by Southampton at 17.4 per cent.

Brighton and Hove also have low quit rates – however Medway has the third highest quit rate in the South East at 3.44 per cent.
