More than 200 people have signed a petition to approve plans to redevelop a petrol station in Windsor.

Developers want to knock down the existing site structure at the Queens Head filling station, in Windsor Road, remove the existing underground tanks and redevelop the site to include a four-pump petrol station with electric vehicle charging points and extended parking provision.

Sor far, 10 people have signed a petition against the plans, with Bray Parish Council also recommending the application for refusal, writing: “The applicant has failed to demonstrate that there are any very special circumstances that would outweigh harm to the green belt.

“The development will have an impact on the openness of the green belt and harm the character due to the scale, sitting and design.”

According to the design and access statement, there will be seven electric charging bays on-site “to adapt to the changing markets” and to “make an important provision in an area with no current coverage”.

Developers wrote: “The existing petrol filling station and ancillary retail store are trading beyond capacity.

“The site has insufficient storage to cope with the level of trade resulting in excessive deliveries – as a result, the site is not trading efficiently.

“The parking capacity is insufficient to meet demand, which leads to inappropriate and unsafe parking, including non-fuel customers parking at the pumps unnecessarily and disrupting the operation of the site.

“The Queens Head filling station represents an important local facility. Many such services have closed nationwide in recent years due to increased provision at supermarkets.

“It is becoming increasingly difficult for independent operators to compete with the aggressive supermarket pricing and, as such, diversification of offer is needed to improve retail sales and ensure the continued provision of a network of roadside filling stations.”

A previous planning application was refused due to the “impact on the openness of the green belt”.

A decision is expected to be made by May 16. To view the plans, visit publicaccess.rbwm.gov.uk/online-applications with reference 19/00677/FULL.
