A 100 mile walk across the West Highland Way has raised thousands of pounds to restore the organs in Windsor's four churches - thanks to two intrepid supporters.

The churches' director of music John Halsey, 60 and the parish clerk Jane Burr, 78, took a week to cover the route from the lowlands to the highlands stretching from Milngavie north of Glasgow to Fort William.

They called it the 4 Organs Sponsored Walk.

They did it in seven stages and Mr Halsey ruefully admits: "An early objective to be away from it all at the moment of leaving the EU did not quite work out as planned."

He said: "We met many others who were walking the West Highland Way, including visitors from the USA, Israel and the Czech Republic.

"At Bridge of Orchy there was a church service. We asked whether there was any music at the service and were told 'yes, the accordion is played by a retired shepherd'.

Miss Burr has been a lifelong supporter of St Stephen Church in Vansittart Road.

She is a former sister at King Edward VII Hospital and says she is known as a great walker.

She said: "I was not sure if I could do it when we started off. I said 'I may have to take a day off' but in the end I did not need to.

"I think the highlight for me was seeing Ben Nevis with snow on it. It has been a lovely walk."

Mr Halsey thinks the pair will have raised £5,000.

It will be welcome.

There is an ongoing appeal to raise £205,000 to repair the organ in the Parish Church. £140,000 has been raised so far.

The organ in All Saints in Frances Road needed £19,000 spending on it and £16,000 has been raised so far.

The organs at St Stephen in Vansittart Road and Holy Trinity at Claremont Road also need work.
