A busy Windsor through road could have a 20mph speed limit imposed on it after complaints from residents about traffic speed.

Frances Road is widely used by drivers passing through the town despite its residential quality.

But the Royal Borough's lead member for highways, Cllr Phill Bicknell, said this week that residents had to come first when it came to the comprehensive review of speed limits in the centre of town currently being carried out.

He said a number of heavily used roads with a large number of homes were being individually assessed for possible reductions.

But he insisted: "We don't pluck them out of the air though. We are listening to what residents are saying and people have got in touch with us in Frances Road complaining that drivers are going much faster than 30MPH.

"It is a residential road and if we find that the majority of people there would like the speed limit reduced to 20mph then so be it. It is democracy and residents' safety must come first."

Resident Marc Leyton-Smith, who lives in nearby Grove Road said: "I was aware there has been a consultation process behind the scenes about possible speed restrictions in Windsor town centre but was quite taken aback to see that Frances Road has recently been selected for a new 20mph speed limit, it would seem in isolation in the locality.

"There are no schools in Frances Road and like it or not, it is a wide arterial thoroughfare with generally good visibility for pedestrians."

He called on the council to target the the section of Kings Road adjacent to the Long Walk leading directly off the roundabout, saying: "Cars come speeding round this blind corner and pedestrians are at significant risk crossing this road as is traffic trying to enter the road from the Windsor Castle pub and Edinburgh Gardens."
