A High Wycombe pub has been ranked as Buckinghamshire’s best pub on review website TripAdvisor, two and a half years after being closed down and boarded-up.

The Squirrel in Booker, High Wycombe, was originally shut in November 2016, before being purchased and reopened by local pair John and Tanya Murray.

John and Tanya worked alongside Hawthorn Leisure and invested £50,000 into the refurbishment work, which has included updating the pub’s exterior, kitchen and dining areas.

John said: “When we bought The Squirrel back in 2017, we had a clear plan in mind, and we knew exactly what we wanted the concept to be.

“We’ve worked really hard to recruit and retain the best team members, deliver the highest standards of customer service and offer a versatile menu comprising dishes made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. We’re so pleased that our vision has come to fruition, and that our customers love The Squirrel as much as we do.”

Hawthorn Leisure Managing Director of Operations Mark McGinty said: “The transformation of The Squirrel is really quite remarkable. In just two years, Jon has taken the pub from a closed-down, boarded-up property to a hugely successful venue in the heart of High Wycombe.

“Now, it not only serves the local community, but attracts diners from far and wide. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Jon and Tanya and being part of The Squirrel’s growth ambitions.”
