YOUNG entrepreneurs from Slough's Eden Girls’ School have come third in a prestigious national competition - thanks to their idea for a Sunday school aimed at asylum seekers.

After winning the regional final of the 2019 Mosaic Enterprise Challenge in March, the team of Year 8 pupils at the Bath Road school pitched their wits against four other competitors in the national final held last Thursday in London.

The Eden pupils' Lazania team had worked with mentors to come up with the idea of a Sunday school to help refugees and asylum seekers find jobs by teaching them about British culture, language and general life skills.

They won a prize of £1,000 for their school and the girls received goodie bags and certificates.

The Mosaic Enterprise Challenge is an annual, national competition for students aged 11 to 16. It is designed to increase young people’s knowledge and understanding of business through interaction with specialist volunteer mentors.

The Eden Girls’ School team, Team LAZANIA, had worked with mentors from Centrica PLC on their business idea.

Team LAZANIA member Ameena Rahman said: “We worked very hard preparing for the final pitch and we feel proud of our performance on the day against some strong competition from the other teams.”

Karim Murcia, Principal of Eden Girls’ School, said: “The pupils have been worked tremendously hard and we are extremely proud of them for coming third. It is a great achievement and the students developed a strong business acumen through this process, so are well on their way to becoming the entrepreneurs of the future.”
